The Steep Skiing Stage in the Dolomites is a technical and educational experience for ski touring and freeride enthusiasts who want to progress towards more demanding terrain, including narrow couloirs, sustained slopes and descents on steep gradients.
In the heart of the Dolomites, one of the most unique natural landscapes in the world, this stage offers a path of technical growth and awareness in one of the most fascinating and demanding environments of ski mountaineering.
The goal is not only to ski steep lines, but to learn how to manage them with method, safety and preparation.
Highlights
- Technical steep skiing stage in the Dolomites.
- Descent techniques on variable snow and complex terrain.
- Progression through narrow couloirs and steep slopes.
- Use of ropes, anchors and abseils.
- Movement in alpine terrain with skis and crampons.
- Line analysis, risk assessment and descent tactics.
- Progressive approach to managing exposure.
Best for
- This stage is designed for experienced skiers and freeride or technical ski touring enthusiasts who want to approach steep skiing in the Dolomites.
- It is suitable for those who already have good off-piste skiing ability, solid physical endurance and a real interest in learning the alpine techniques needed to move safely on steep and exposed terrain.
Program
The Steep Skiing Stage in the Dolomites covers the main techniques for progression and descent in steep terrain, with a practical, progressive approach closely connected to real experience in the field.
Activities take place in the Dolomites and in other selected alpine areas, chosen according to the best snow and safety conditions of the period, in ideal environments for learning techniques on couloirs, sustained slopes and exposed sections.
The full stage lasts three days.
- Day 1 – The first day is dedicated to assessing the technical level of the group and each participant, before progressively introducing the main technical aspects that will be consolidated over the following days.
The activity takes place on steep but controlled terrain, along an itinerary of moderate difficulty and without significant exposure: an ideal setting to start becoming familiar with the specific techniques of steep skiing.
During the day, the following technical topics are covered:
- Turning technique on steep slopes and in narrow spaces.
- Slipping control on the fall line.
- Protected descent and safety management in steep terrain.
- Abandoned anchors and equipment recovery.
- Abseils on steep or compulsory sections.
- Crampon progression on technical terrain.
- Descent tactics and terrain reading.
- Day 2 – The second day takes place on steeper terrain, with gradients of around 40°, in a more demanding and dynamic setting. The goal is to put the skills learned into practice through structured work on planning, ascent strategy and descent management on an objective chosen at the end of the first day.
Strong focus is placed on making technical procedures automatic and on risk management, with particular attention to:
- Organising the ascent in steep terrain.
- Choosing descent lines and stopping points.
- Group management and communication on the slope.
- Applying safety techniques in real conditions.
- Day 3 – The final day is dedicated to a tour on steep terrain with increasing difficulty, designed to consolidate and refine the skills acquired during the stage.
The focus is on progressively gaining autonomy in managing both ascent and descent, applying the techniques learned with awareness and precision.
During the outing, you will work on:
- Refining individual technique on steep terrain.
- Managing progression on complex itineraries.
- Consolidating rope manoeuvres and safety procedures.
- Choosing the route according to conditions.
- Continuous terrain reading and real-time adaptation.
- Conscious risk management in an alpine environment.
