Ice climbing on Monte Nero di Presanella is one of the most fascinating experiences in the Eastern Alps. Located at 3,344 metres in the Adamello-Presanella group, Monte Nero rises above upper Val Nambrone, just beyond Rifugio Segantini, in one of the most evocative environments of western Trentino.
Often considered the sentinel summit of Presanella, the highest mountain in Trentino, Monte Nero holds an extraordinary north face standing opposite the Vedretta d’Amola glacier. In terms of size, shape and quality of its lines, it is often compared to a smaller version of the great faces of the Mont Blanc massif.
With the arrival of autumn and the first snowfalls, this face becomes a true paradise for winter mountaineering, offering some of the most beautiful goulottes and ice climbs in the Eastern Alps.
When temperatures begin to drop and snow covers the high-altitude walls, Monte Nero comes into its best condition. October and November are often ideal for climbing these elegant, technical lines, set in a severe, wild and highly panoramic environment.
