The ascent of Gran Zebrù (3,851 m) is one of the most iconic objectives in the Ortles-Cevedale group, between Val Martello and Val di Solda, on the border between Italy and Austria. Also known as Königspitze, it is one of the most recognisable glacial pyramids in the Alps and one of the most sought-after destinations for high-altitude mountaineering.
Its elegant, steep shape makes it a dream objective for experienced mountaineers. The ascent takes place in a serious and highly alpine environment, with steep gullies and sharp ridges. The different routes require solid mountaineering experience and confidence on mixed terrain, with passages on snow, ice and rock. From the summit, the view opens wide over the Ortles-Cevedale group and the main peaks of the Central Alps.
The best period for the Normal Route is generally early in the season, when the snow still covers the ice, making conditions safer and progression smoother. The ridges, on the other hand, can also be climbed later in the season, when the rock is more exposed and free from snow.
