Freeride Course in the Dolomites – Off-Piste Skiing in Trentino and South Tyrol

Difficulty:

The freeride course in the Dolomites, based in Madonna di Campiglio and in the main alpine ski areas of Trentino and South Tyrol, is the ideal choice for anyone who wants to approach or progress in off-piste skiing in a structured, continuous way.

It takes place on adventure terrain, where technique, adaptation and risk management are essential parts of the experience. From off-piste lines just a few turns from the lifts to wider, more untouched slopes in the Dolomites and across the Alps, the course helps you improve your skiing with greater awareness, control and quality of movement in every situation.

Freeride skiing is about freedom, but also about presence, judgement and the ability to read the mountain. This course brings those elements together through practical days on snow, combining fun, adrenaline and technical progression.

Highlights

  • Freeride course in the Dolomites, between Trentino and South Tyrol.
  • Technical progression on piste, off-piste terrain and natural snow.
  • Development of skiing technique in fresh snow and variable conditions.
  • Work on fluidity, control and adaptation to terrain.
  • Terrain reading, line choice and group management.
  • Introduction to avalanche awareness and self-rescue.
  • Short ascents with skins to access selected freeride lines.

Best for

  • This course is designed for intermediate and advanced skiers who want to improve their off-piste technique and develop greater autonomy and awareness in a freeride environment.
  • It is ideal for those who already ski confidently on piste and want to move towards a smoother, more effective and natural style in fresh snow, while expanding their skills in the varied terrain of the Dolomites and the Alps.
  • Perfect for anyone who wants to learn how to enjoy freeride skiing with more control, better technique and a clearer understanding of risk management.

Program

  • The course covers the main aspects of off-piste skiing: snow sensitivity, line choice, terrain reading, group management and technical development in fresh snow.
  • The work alternates piste exercises with progressive movement in natural terrain, so the technical movements can be consolidated first, then applied in real conditions.
  • The outings are adapted to the level of the group and to snow conditions, with gradual progression towards more demanding terrain. During the course, short ascents with skins may be included, both to access preferred lines and to develop good habits when moving through alpine terrain or managing unexpected situations.
  • Activities take place between Madonna di Campiglio, Trentino and South Tyrol, as well as in other Dolomite areas selected according to the best snow and safety conditions of the period. These are ideal environments for learning to ski fresh snow, natural gullies, woodland and variable slopes.

The full course lasts three days.

  • Day 1 – The first day is dedicated to assessing the technical level of the group and each participant, then progressively introducing the main technical elements of freeride skiing that will be consolidated over the following days.

The activity takes place on controlled terrain within a ski area, between piste and accessible off-piste sections. It is the ideal setting to start becoming familiar with the basic techniques of skiing in fresh snow and adventure terrain.

During the day, the following topics are covered:

    • Centred position and balance on skis.
    • Adapting technique to different types of snow.
    • Terrain reading and line choice.
    • Introduction to the avalanche bulletin.
    • Basic elements of avalanche self-rescue.
  • Day 2 – The second day takes place on real freeride terrain, with risk assessment and management throughout the itinerary. The aim is to put the skills learned into practice through structured work on off-piste routes chosen according to current conditions.

The main focus areas are:

  • Planning the outing and reading the avalanche bulletin.
  • Dynamic assessment of snow conditions in the field.
  • Line choice.
  • Group management in a freeride environment.
  • Adapting turns to narrow spaces and compulsory passages.
  • Continuity and fluidity of movement.
  • Avalanche self-rescue practice.
  • Day 3 – The final day is dedicated to a freeride outing on wider and more complex terrain, designed to consolidate and refine the skills developed during the course.

The focus is on progressively gaining autonomy in managing skiing in a natural environment, applying the techniques learned over the previous days with awareness and control.

During the outing, the work includes:

  • Refining freeride skiing technique in an alpine environment.
  • Choosing the itinerary according to conditions.
  • Managing the route with increasing autonomy.
  • Continuous terrain reading and technical adaptation.
  • Fluidity, control and continuity in all types of snow.
