Climbing Campanil Basso is one of the most fascinating and iconic mountaineering experiences in the Brenta Dolomites. Located in the heart of Trentino, between Madonna di Campiglio and Lake Molveno, this extraordinary rock tower is considered a true legend of mountaineering and a symbolic destination for generations of climbers.<\/p>\n
Its mountaineering history began in 1897, when Trentino climber Carlo Garbari, accompanied by porter Nino Pooli and guide Antonio Tavernaro, managed to reach a point just a few metres below the summit. An impressive overhang, however, still blocked the way and was considered impossible at the time.<\/p>\n
Tradition says that, exasperated by the impossibility of finding a way out, Garbari even pulled out a pistol to convince Pooli to attempt the final section: an episode that clearly conveys the tension, uncertainty and boldness that marked the first mountaineering explorations.<\/p>\n
The Campanil Basso puzzle was solved only two years later. On 18 August 1899, Austrians Otto Ampferer and Karl Berger successfully completed the first ascent, opening the way to one of the most famous chapters in the history of Dolomite mountaineering.<\/p>\n
Today, Campanil Basso is universally recognised as one of the most beautiful spires in the world. Isolated, slender and elegant, it rises in the heart of the Sfulmini chain with an unmistakable silhouette.
